Something New

I'd like to try something new. Not exactly a meme, but an interactive post. I will ask questions, and you will leave me answers in my comments section. You may remain anonymous if you so desire, but I expect all my regular readers to respond. So I should have at least 5 responses-1 or 2 from Canada, 2 or 3 from Georgia(including Scientific Atlanta(I miss you L.)), 1 from Arizona, and hopefully 1 from Lee College, and 1 from New York(see, I know who reads my blog(well, I know where you live, but not always who you are)).

I decided that you guys know all about me, but I don't know much about some of you, including who you are, so we can all get to know each other through random questions. And if everyone responds, you will have something to read in between my postings(which are getting further and further apart). So here we go.

Today's questions are about cars.

1. What was your first car? Did you pick it out or did your parents ? How old were you when you got it?
2. What kind of car do you drive now? Does it fit your personality?
3. Of all the cars you have ever owned, what was your favorite car and why.

Here's my answer.

1. My first car was a 1987 Honda Accord. It was dark blue, 4 door, automatic. And it had the flip up headlights. My parents picked it out. I couldn't handle another day of car shopping with my dad(I love him lots, but shopping for big ticket items with him can be, well, not fun). So one Sunday after church my parents went out and came back with my lovely car. I couldn't have picked better. It's nice when your parents know you so well. Now I wonder what I was thinking, letting them pick for me. I was 17. I didn't get my driver's licence until I was 18. I think I got it one week before I left for college. (I was in a bad wreck when I was 14 and it left me with very little desire to drive, but my mom said she refused to drive me to college).

2. I currently drive a Ford Windstar(can't remember the year). It may not fit my personality, but it does fit my family. And it is burgundy, which is one of my favorite car colors. And it was free. I get to drive the Toyota Corolla on my rare ventures alone. It's a nice little car.

3. My favorite car to drive was my Honda Accord. I loooooooved that car. But all the electrical systems failed a few years after we married. I liked the way it looked, I liked the way it drove. I liked the way I fit in it. The other cars I have been part owner of have been serviceable and decent, but not nearly as fun as my Honda.

See, that's not too painful.

Let the answering Begin!!

Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving to my American readers and my Americans in Canadian Exile readers. We did the usual Turkey with my parents and family. P. didn't want to eat the turkey because he only likes it when it's flat(lunch meat from the deli). But he did eat some and liked it. Splitcat played the hero and took the 6 big kids outside to play football(the twins are still too small :)). I have apparently gone insane and will be joining my mother-in-law for our annual day after Thanksgiving shopping spree at 6 am. I think I have to take the twins with me, so I won't be gone as long as I usually am.

Ok, this is a great idea. It's way better than a meme, because we can read it all in one place. Here goes.

1. What was your first car? Did you pick it out or did your parents ? How old were you when you got it?

Not counting my Mom's station wagon, my own first car was a 1970's vintage Fiat Brava. I belive I picked it out, because it had 4 doors and looked like an amphibious landing craft. It cost $500, and I had to replace the radiator and hood before I could even drive it.

As Fiat stands for Fix It Again Tony, I spent an enormous amount of time under the hood of that car and got to know the local Fiat parts dealer intimately before the electrical system just died completely.

The AC broke, the roof liner fell out, and the poured foam dashboard would vibrate erraticly starting at 55 MPH before settling into a nice harmonic around 65. It was not trusted to get me to college and was replaced with a 90 Honda Civic, my first and last New Car.

2. What kind of car do you drive now? Does it fit your personality?

I don't have a car right now, and it fits me perfectly. I hate to drive, don't need to (usually), and take any opportunity not to get behind the wheel.

My wife has a minivan (perhaps she'll post here), and it fits my personality much more than hers. She's a cool Volvo Wagon Mom, but I don't have that kind of cash.

I am about to get an older Honda Accord (maybe today? who knows?). It is dignified, understated, and reliable, and so is everything I am not and wish I could be.

3. Of all the cars you have ever owned, what was your favorite car and why.

Wow. This is the hard one. I have liked pretty much every one. I loved the 90 Civic because it was super awesome. I could do anything to it and it would still run like a charm. Bumpy south Georgia dirt roads, shallow north Georgia mountain rivers, it handled them all with grace.

My wife's Acura Integra, the three Accords, the red Volvo wagon that proved too small still, the blue 98 Odyssey, the Camry and even the Gift Protege, all have their own special places in my heart. I even have some feelings still for the Brava.

But I guess I'll have to put the Civic at the top of a tall pile.

1. What was your first car? Did you pick it out or did your parents ? How old were you when you got it?

My first car was a Subaru 4 door, 5- speed. I picked it out, but my dad paid for it(yeaaaah dad!!) I liked it first of all because it fell in the price range my dad had given me, so it didn't cost me anything. Second of all it was fun to drive and looked sporty. I didn't know how to drive a 5-speed when I bought it, but it didn't take long(ha ha) to learn. After investing in the car and teaching me how to drive, my dad had to invest in a new clutch for the car. I think I was 17 when I learned to drive because my mother also told me she wouldn't drive me to college.

2. What kind of car do you drive now? Does it fit your personality?

Now I drive a Kia Sedona minivan. Does it fit my personality? I don't know. Probably. It is starting not to fit my lifestyle though. 4 big kids have a lot of stuff. I wonder if they have a what kind of car are you blogger quiz?

3. Of all the cars you have ever owned, what was your favorite car and why.

There is a tie for this question. I had a black Honda Accord that I loved. It was fun to drive (also a 5-speed) and looked cool. Don't you just love the sound a Honda makes when you start it up? It was an awesome car. There was just one major problem with it. It had a sun roof. The sun roof looked great, but after it rained and you tried to back out of the driveway, about 2 gallons of freezing cold water would pour down the back of your neck and all over the back seat. This was not very practical when you are expecting your first child, which brings me to my next favorite car. A 1995 Dodge Stratus. Our first brand new car. It was great. It kept you dry, it was very comfortable, a 5-speed, had a great stereo system. Compared to the FIAT we drove after we got married (I know hate is a strong word, but I hated that car) the stratus was the lap of luxury. Then we had to move to the world of the minivan. I had a plymouth voyager for awhile, but I must say I like my Kia much better. It's nice to drive for a van. It drives more like a car than a van, or so I've been told. Now I'm looking into getting a 12 passenger van, which for a person who hates to drive at all should be a real adventure to try to drive.... and not nearly as much fun as a Honda.

I like your game. I agree with 4boy dad- it's better to get to read the meme in one place. I hope my husband will play when he gets time because he has a funny first car. But as for me, here I go.
1.My first car was a big blue American Brick. I can assure you it was my parents' choice. They thought it would be "safer" to give me a boat that took up 3 lanes instead of a cute sports car. At the time I was mortified because I went to the school of the rich and famous who drove their trans-am's and IrocZ's with pride. There was even a guy (look out Michael J. Fox) that sometimes drove his dad's Delorien (I am a girl and don't even pretend to know how to spell car types). I also am such a girl that I don't know the kind of Blue Brick I owned for years. It was an Olds. Cutlas Supreme I think. Or maybe a Buick. My dad got it from his company (the now expired Atlantic Steel Company- you can now shop at Ikea on the site of his work for my whole life growing up and know that you are walking on a lot of toxic waste. That has been a great joke to us insiders who know the history of the upscale "Atlantic Station" community). Anyway, about my car, it was a used traveling sales guy's road car. And did I mention that it was big?
2. I now drive a Mazda MPV van that a relative of 4boydad helped my husbad nab at an auto auction when we had our 4th kid and realized that they would not all fit in the Toyota Corolla. I am a girl again. I thought for months I had a "Most Valuable Player" and called it my "MVP" van. I later found out that it stands for "Multi Purpose Vehicle." We have used it for multiple purposes, so I suppose it was aptly named. With you, I proclaim that it does not fit my personality but it does fit my family. Right now it is really messy, and I guessTHAT fits my personality.
3.There is no question that my favourite ever car was my black Acura Integra. It is the only brand new car I have ever owned. It was a dream of a car. It took me to Yellowstone and to Florida many times and it took me and my best friend and part of the band Jacob's Trouble to PA for Creation Festival. It took me home from Rome, Ga to Atlanta almost every weekend of my first 2 years at Berry College, and I can't even count how many times it took me to the Great Smokies, my true home sweet home if only in my heart.
I loved that car. It was almost to 300k when it died of a broken heart and engine. It should be noted that it had several oil leaks and had run out of oil at least 3 times before the engine blew. At least 3 times out of oil before we killed it! Got to love the Honda Company. One day when I have more time I will have to come back and post how I, the lowly Disney Store Employee warented a brand new Acura Integra.
Man I loved that car.

1. What was your first car? Did you pick it out or did your parents ? How old were you when you got it?
The first car was a Volkswagen Rabbit of a color that my dad described generously as"puke green". He was free to describe it as he wished considering it was his car until he got something else. I do not remember what model year it was. I was a senior in high school when I got the privilge of driving it to school. I took it with me to my first year at Berry C. I liked the car for its uniqueness. By the time I was done with it, my mother had left a fine dent on the front left quarter panel that we covered with brown primer and a pair of brainless thieves at Berry had broken off both locks and left a huge hole in the dash where my Blauplunkt stereo had been. My mom and dad each tried to teach me to drive in the car without success. I drove the Rabbit to my first driving test and failed miserably. My brother had to teach me to drive. That car got me through a Friday afternoon blizzard that I foolishly braved because I could not stand the thought of being snowed in at Berry over the weekend. It was a fine car. Losing the key to this car at youth group led to my brother breaking his hand but that is another story.
2. What kind of car do you drive now? Does it fit your personality?
I have a 2006 Toyota Corolla that we bought as our one car last December. Then we found out we were having another baby which was okay since three could fit in the back. Then we found out we were having two babies. The car fits me fine: it is plain and simple with no fancy devices and automatic nothings though it has an annoying habit of nagging us to put on our safety belts. So, yeah, it fits my personality. I got my first specialty plate this year: A Trout Unlimited plate (but I didn't go trout fishing this year...go figure). It was such a lovely weekend this weekend that I washed it.
3. Of all the cars you have ever owned, what was your favorite car and why.
I hate cars. I want to live in a city that has excellent public transportation or in Montana where I can ride a horse. I hate the continual high maintenance. One always has to be adding this or checking that and they always end up breaking down anyway at the most inconvienent times. That being said, my favorite vehicle is, by far, the Windstar since my students gave it to me.

Peace,
Splitcat

A bit delayed, but Scientific Atlanta chiming in -

1. My first car was a red Ford Tempo, I can't remember the year. My parents picked it for my sister. I conveniently turned 16 when my sister was in her first year of college and wasn't allowed to have a car - so it became my car. It was a good car for about two years before it started completely dying at random times while driving. Which led to a new car before going to college which was very nice.

2. I now drive a '99 grey Ford Explorer. I guess it does kinda fit my personality - it has been a great vehicle for all the rock climbing, mtn biking, and camping trips we've been on. I did get to pick it - well, the color and stereo type anyway. My parents bought it for me when I was in college after finding out that the Geo Prizm I was driving got bad crash-test ratings - it was time for a very "safe" car. As much as I like the Explorer, I don't like how often I put gas in it.

3. I have only had three cars, and you've heard about 2 of them - so my favorite would probably be the Geo Prizm, with the Explorer a close second. It was a deep blue '96 Prizm (and blue is my favorite color). It was a 5-speed manual with no fancy electronic windows or locks, but a nice stereo (sounded good to me anyway). Simple and functional.

Delayed here too, thanks to the insanity that is Nano. So here is another Canadian checking in.

1. My first car wasn't a car. It was a 1975 Jeep pickup truck that my husband and I bought together when we were first married (1980). We totalled the thing in a snowstorm a couple years later. Much like the snowstorm we had this weekend, come to think of it.

Current vehicle: Hubby and I own two. I drive the one he wants and he drives the one I want. Yes, it makes sense. He drives our 1996 VW Passat because it gets 65 miles per gallon and he commutes to an out of town job. I drive the 1993 GMC 3/4 ton extended cab 4WD pickup because we live on the farm and need the darn thing. It's comfortable to drive, though. I'd hope the Passat was more my personality. :P

Favorite vehicle? The Passat has heated seats and other luxuries! So it is my new favorite. For years we drove a 1989 Toyota 4-Runner. It suited our family (2 kids and a large dog) perfectly as well as our camping/ back-country lifestyle in a rural mountainous area of BC. It was absolutely perfect and we drove it to 400,000 kilometers before it pretty much died.

Am I posting repeatedly? The comment doesn't seem to want to take...
